Facets
Senior Recital for Julian BaldwinVIRTUAL VENUE | Harmony Hall
Facets is a culmination of Julian’s long life journey in earning his degree. A program of vocally demanding but nuanced and intricate repertoire of music spanning the 19th and 21st centuries with works by Arnold Schoenberg, Kurt Weill, Erik Satie, Gregory Spears, and Giacomo Puccini. On this recital, Julian is also premiering a new work by his dear friend, Edward Shilts. The Grace Unit is a work about the emotional difficulties of suicidal ideation, with a text by Shawn Deegan. This recital explores the many facets of Julian’s identity. Namely, his Judaism, his neurodivergence, his queerness, and his growth as a musician over the last four years. Julian teams up with his accompanist, Jeremiah Hines and soprano, Qiuyu Li. This recital is in fulfillment of his degree requirements at the Conservatory.

Body and Voice, Somatic Re-education
This Month's Book: Body and Voice, Somatic Re-educationVIRTUAL VENUE | Cafe DiwanukKwanzmas
VoiceCare BookClub—Voice geeks unite! We all have books we want to read to learn more about the voice, so let’s do it in community! This month we willl dive into: Body and Voice, Somatic Re-education by Marina Gilman!
Body and Voice: Somatic Re-education is an excellent resource for teachers of singing, voice coaches, and speech-language pathologists who work with singers and other voice professionals. It provides a new paradigm for working with singers in a way that allows for improved kinesthetic awareness needed to work with their body rather than against it. The text contains a series of lessons designed to train singing teachers, coaches, and voice therapists to recognize in their students the patterns of use and posture that interfere with respiration, phonation, and/or resonance. In addition, it provides tools for the teacher to guide the student to a level of self-awareness of habituated patterns along with strategies to implement change from the inside out.
Few pedagogical or therapeutic approaches provide any training in the recognition of the subtle, indirect patterns of use, stance, or tension that prevent students from relaxing the jaw, releasing the breath, lifting the palate, or any of the other demands teachers make to get them to sing well. Even when the teacher recognizes that there is a problem, the knowledge of how to retrain the student’s neuro-musculo-skeletal system in order to effect real change and self-awareness by the student is often limited or lacking. Body and Voice: Somatic Re-education addresses this need.
This book begins with a brief definition and theoretical overview of body reeducation, its principles and applications. Subsequent chapters teach how to recognize poor body dynamics. The final chapters provide specific lessons as well as guidance for independent explorations that will increase the student’s kinesthetic and body awareness.
A CD-ROM containing the lessons described in the book is included.

VoiceCare BookClub—Voice lovers have books they want to read to learn more about the voice, so let’s do it in community and meet the authors!
This month we will dive into: Singing Through Change — Womens’ Voices in Midlife, Menopause and Beyond. Bring a cup of your favorite beverage and settle in for an informal discussion with authors Joanne Bozeman and Nancy Bos.
Digital book can be purchased here: AMAZON BOOKS.
A graduate of the University of Arizona, Joanne Bozeman (she, her) has been a singing teacher for 48 years. She was faculty member at Lawrence University’s Conservatory of Music in the state of Wisconsin for 26 years, where she taught singing and a number of voice and music education courses. In addition to her career as a voice teacher, Joanne was an actively performing soprano. Inspired by her long-standing interest in voice health and the relationship of hormones with voice throughout the female lifespan, Joanne co-authored the book Singing Through Change: Women’s Voices in Midlife, Menopause, and Beyond, released in 2020. She is a frequent presenter on the subject of female voice and hormones for many organizations, including the International Congress of Voice Teachers (ICVT), the British Voice Association, (BVA), the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), the Pan American Vocology Association (PAVA), International Voice Teachers of Mix (IVTOM), and others. Retired from academia and professional singing, Joanne continues to be engaged with the voice community as a teacher and researcher.
Nancy Bos is a professional singer and voice coach, and a member of the Pan American Vocology Association. She’ll share with you, in a straightforward and entertaining way, how to look at the impact of our personal stories in our figurative and literal voices, how to reframe narratives that are not serving us, and how to prevent doubt and fear from holding us back — even in the face of opposition. Now is the time for each of us to unleash our personal power and make a difference – are you ready?
